It's no secret that we spend more time at work than we do at home (and many of us actually blur those lines by working from home). And as companies downsize and require their employees to do more with less, it's more important than ever to assess how well we are using our time. With that said, the workplace is probably the best place to practice better time management techniques so that you not only have a more productive day, but also gain a little bit of that precious commodity for yourself - time.
Let's take a look at one item that is a huge time waster for everyone: Paperwork. According to the Wall Street Journal, business execs in America waste about six weeks each year—that's one hour each day—just looking for paperwork or other items they need.
According to the Journal, paper clutter isn't a sign of poor organizational skills; it's a symptom of poor time management techniques. The article recommends:
Taking stock of everything on your desk and dividing papers into stacks of things to file, to do or toss. Once you're left with your "to-do" stack, attack it with sticky notes and pen in hand.
For each piece of paper, jot down (on a sticky note) your action plan and how much time it will take, then attach it to the paper. After you've completed this exercise, you'll have a better idea of how long it will take you to trim that pile down to nothing. Build that time into your schedule, but don't stop there.
Set aside 30 minutes every day (maybe while enjoying your morning coffee, or right before you leave the office for the night) to clear your desk of paperwork. With a small effort toward constant maintenance, you'll avoid those overwhelming pile-ups.
Look at that! You've gained a few more minutes to sit down and actually enjoy your lunch. Those homemade leftovers (which, you made last night thanks to the extra time you saved at work) will now taste that much better.
