Winners of the 2012 21st Century Insurance College Scholarship

Congratulations Marissa Akery!

We are thrilled to announce Marissa Akery, a senior at the University of Georgia, as the grand prize winner of our College Scholarship Contest. Marissa's winning essay and photos shared her amazing non-profit and volunteer efforts as a University Ambassador, a Friends for Life mentor and a Girl Scout Troop Leader. She will receive a $10,000 scholarship for college, which she plans to use toward her upcoming study abroad semester in Spain!

Inspired by her mother (a fellow Scout and former Troop Leader), Marissa was taught the importance of giving back at an early age. "Growing up, we spent a lot of time at homeless shelters and nursing homes," said Akery. "It isn't something I have to find time for, it is part of my everyday routine," she added.

Marissa, who maintains a 3.36 GPA, credits both her personal and educational achievements to the Girl Scouts. "Scouting has taught me important life skills like budgeting and event planning, and it's given me the confidence to have a voice and presence among a crowd." Akery sees her current Troop Leader role as an opportunity to "serve in a greater realm," as many of those of whom she serves will go on to help others.

What's next? After a semester in Spain and graduation, Marissa hopes to spread her good will and service worldwide to work on International Missions.
